This isn’t new, but I’m just getting around to posting about it:
FT has announced that Newssift has shut down. Too bad: it had a good UI with cool examples of faceted navigation. The multi-faceted autocomplete feature for the main search box on the start page was particularly interesting. And of course, it was one of the first readily-available commercial applications that I know of to make use of sentiment analysis.

Do you have any hints on why the site shut down? All comments I find are positive, so what was the problem?

No, I don’t have any more specific information about why Newssift shut down. I suspect it wasn’t a worthwhile business venture and probably wasn’t due to the technology or interface. Just a guess though…
