More Detail

I am currently the Chief Evangelist at MURAL. Previously, I worked in various design-related consulting roles for large companies, such as eBay, Audi, SONY, Elsevier Science, LexisNexis, and Citrix.

Before moving back to the US in 2013 after living for fifteen years in Germany, I was the co-founder of the European Information Architecture conferences. I also founded the IA Konferenz, a leading UX design event in Germany.

For many years, I was an editor with Boxes and Arrows, a leading online journal for user experience information. I also served on the advisory board of the Information Architecture Institute in 2007 and 2005.

Music is a main creative outlet outside of work. I play jazz bass and dabble in jam sessions and local jazz festivals in Jersey City, where I live with my wife Nathalie. Together with my bass teacher, Teymur Phell, we self published a book on walking bass, called Killer Walking Bass, vol 1.

In 2007, I published my first full-length book, Designing Web Navigation (O’Reilly, 2007). My second book, Mapping Experiences (O’Reilly, 2016) was a #1 bestseller on Amazon in the Business Development section. The second edition of Mapping Experiences appeared at the end of 2020.

My third full-length book, The JTBD Playbook, was released in April 2020. I complemented that the JTBD Toolkit, an online resource with training, workshops, and content.
